On Friday, several members of the MediSked team had the pleasure of attending the 6th Annual Catholic Charities Community Services Breakfast with Friends Event. Catholic Charities Community Services (CCCS) supports over 3,000 individuals with developmental disabilities, traumatic brain injuries, chronic illnesses, and HIV/AIDs each year. Proceeds from this inspiring and educational event went to benefit the important work of CCCS.
This year, CCCS sought to raise awareness of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and concussions. Steve Campbell, a client of Catholic Charities Communities Services, shared his story about suffering from a traumatic brain injury as a teenager. He explained how the CCCS TBI Waiver Service Coordination Program has allowed him to live independently in the community with the supports he needs since 2003. The keynote speaker of the event, Dr. Bennet Omalu, delivered a dynamic and engaging speech about concussions and the dangers of contact sports for individuals under the age of 18. You may recognize his name from the hit movie, Concussion, where Dr. Omalu was portrayed by Will Smith or from the PBS documentary, League of Denial. In 2002, Dr. Omalu, a forensic pathologist and neuropathologist, performed an autopsy on Mike Webster, former Pittsburgh Steelers football player. Following the autopsy, Dr. Omalu self-financed independent tissue analyses on Webster’s brain and discovered, chronic traumatic encephalopathy or CTE.
